A manufacturer installed a new paint booth which included a drying oven. To find out if he had been treated fairly by his contractor, he asked us to come in and review the installation for compliance with building, mechanical, and fire codes. We discovered that the exhaust from the paint booth moved at less than 100 linear feet per minute, below the requirements of fire code, mechanical code, and OSHA. We duly reported this to the manufacturer and recommended that they seek relief from their contractor. The next call came from the contractor, along with a representative of the booth manufacturer. These gentlemen claimed that no such requirement ever existed and that a velocity of 50 feet per minute was “industry standard.”
Needless to say, we held our ground, as OSHA and the codes are quite clear on this subject. To our knowledge though, the manufacturer was never able to receive compensation from the supplier of the booth or the contractor who installed it.
A distribution firm called us to find out if handling vanilla oil would be dangerous. After doing some research, we discovered that it is indeed a flammable substance, so we let them know. As the warehouse had distributed no other flammables, they declined the offer to distribute vanilla oil.
If this had been discovered post facto by their insurance company, they could have lost their insurance policy. And if there had been a fire, they would have been in violation of several building and fire codes. Worse yet, there could have been a loss of lives and property. So we knew we had done something very important for this client!
